Abuja – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has defended its decision to detain Martins Innocent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkBlackMan, stating that the move is in line with its statutory mandate to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes.

In a statement released to NewsReporters Online on Tuesday, the Commission revealed that Otse was invited in connection with multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct. According to the EFCC, the social media influencer failed to honour several invitations sent to him through known addresses and communication channels.

“The petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the Commission,” the agency stated.

The EFCC also cautioned against what it described as “several unguarded attacks” by Otse against its operations, saying that such actions do not preclude anyone from lawful investigation.

The agency further confirmed that it secured a valid remand order to hold Otse in custody and emphasized that he is being treated like any other suspect under investigation.

“He has been offered an administrative bail and would be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions,” the statement concluded.
