The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released a statistical breakdown of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that only a tiny fraction of candidates attained top scores, while more than half scored below 200.

According to the official data, out of a total of 1,955,069 candidates who registered for the exam, only 4,756 candidates (0.24%) scored 320 and above, while 7,658 candidates (0.39%) scored between 300 and 319. In total, only 12,414 candidates (0.63%) crossed the 300 mark.

A significantly larger number—73,441 candidates (3.76%)—scored between 250 and 299, while 334,560 (17.11%) scored between 200 and 249. However, the majority, approximately 1,471,384 candidates (over 75%), scored below 200. This includes 983,187 candidates (50.29%) who fell within the 160–199 range and 488,197 (24.97%) who scored 140–159.

The data also revealed that 71,701 candidates were absent from the examination. In addition, 97 candidates were confirmed to have committed exam infractions, while 2,157 others are currently under investigation for various forms of malpractice.

JAMB also disclosed that 40,247 underage candidates were allowed to take the test to demonstrate exceptional ability. However, only 467 of them (1.16%) met the criteria for “exceptional performance,” pending further assessment across three subsequent stages.

Meanwhile, candidates who experienced biometric verification challenges are still being reviewed, and those cleared will be rescheduled to sit for the exam at designated centres. Also, results of some special groups, including blind and JEOG (Joint Examination for the Gifted) candidates, are still being processed.

A press conference is scheduled for later this week where JAMB will guide candidates on how to access their individual results.
