Abuja, April 14, 2025 — Governor of Anambra State Chukwuma Soludo and the Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, have expressed profound grief over the death of Nigerian football icon, Christian Chukwu, describing him as one of the greatest figures in the nation’s sporting history.

In a condolence message issued by the Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Christian Aburime, Soludo described Chukwu as a true patriot, a formidable defender and a leader of men.
Similarly, Obi in a heartfelt statement on Sunday, paid tribute to Chukwu’s illustrious career, recalling the football legend’s enduring legacy as both a player and coach. Widely known by fans as “Field Marshal” and “Chairman,” Chukwu captained the Nigerian national team and his beloved club, Rangers International of Enugu, before transitioning to a coaching role.
Obi lauded Chukwu’s immense contributions to Nigerian football, describing him as a symbol of discipline, leadership, and patriotism.
“Christian Chukwu was not only an outstanding footballer but also an exemplary leader. His passion for the game and commitment to national pride brought joy to millions and raised Nigeria’s profile on the international stage,” Obi said.
He also commended Chukwu’s role in mentoring young talents and promoting the growth of football in Nigeria even after retiring from active play.
“He remained a mentor and a coach long after hanging up his boots, dedicating himself to developing the next generation of players. His life was a testament to resilience and patriotic service,” Obi added.
Reflecting on recent bereavements in Nigerian football, Obi also mourned the passing of Christian Isiadinso, another former captain of Rangers International, who died in March.
“These legends gave their all for the advancement of Nigerian sports. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he noted.
Obi extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, the football community, and the nation at large. He prayed for the eternal rest of the departed and hoped their legacies would continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
