Lagos — April 10, 2025
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Friday Onu after a disturbing video showing him assaulting a female commercial driver, Yetunde Amole, went viral on social media.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 7, around 2 p.m., near the Oriental Hotel along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
According to the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Onu was caught attempting to steal the car battery from Amole’s vehicle when she confronted him. In response, he launched a violent attack, leaving Amole with a visibly swollen face as seen in the widely circulated footage.
“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the viral video… The suspect, identified as Friday Onu, was caught attempting to steal Ms. Amole’s car battery. Amole courageously intervened to prevent the theft, which resulted in the suspect assaulting her,” Hundeyin said in a statement released Wednesday.
He added that officers from the Maroko Division promptly arrested Onu shortly after the attack. However, before he could be arraigned, Onu reportedly fell ill in police custody and was transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he is currently under medical supervision.
Hundeyin assured the public that the suspect would be charged to court once declared medically fit. “Justice will be served,” he stressed, adding that the command remains committed to the protection of all residents.
Ms. Amole, speaking in the viral video, described how the suspect boarded her vehicle pretending to be a passenger heading to the Nigerian Law School. Her suspicions were raised when she saw him through her rearview mirror attempting to remove her car battery.
Despite her injuries, Amole’s bravery has drawn praise from many, with the police commending her courage and assuring that her case would be pursued thoroughly.
