Maiduguri, Nigeria – April 8, 2025: Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has decried the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks across the state, warning that the increasing wave of violence and unchecked terrorist activities suggest that the state is gradually losing control to insurgents.
Zulum made the statement on Tuesday during a Special Expanded Security Meeting in Maiduguri, where he detailed a series of disturbing developments, including the daily killing of civilians, abductions, and the takeover of military bases by insurgents.
“In the past weeks, we’ve witnessed renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings across several communities, often without any confrontation,” Zulum said. “This signals a troubling decline in security and suggests Borno is losing ground.”
The governor expressed particular concern over the ransacking and dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko and Sabon Gari (Damboa Local Government), Wulgo (Gamboru Ngala), and Izge (Gwoza Local Government), describing them as major setbacks for both state and regional security.
He noted that these attacks not only endanger civilians and security operatives but also undermine the fragile stability restored in recent years through collaborative efforts between the state government and the military.
Zulum praised the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for its ongoing support, while calling for greater investment in advanced military technology and strategic deployment.
“To reverse this trend, we must do more,” he said. “The deployment of modern warfare technology is crucial in combating insurgency, especially in border communities vulnerable to infiltration due to their proximity to Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.”
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, while urging a united front in addressing the evolving security threats facing Borno and the broader North-East region.
