Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is uncertain about contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who has vied for the presidency six times, made this revelation in an upcoming television interview on Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie.
His comments come just days after announcing a coalition of opposition leaders aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.
Atiku: ‘I Don’t Know If I’ll Run’
When asked about his plans for the 2027 election, Atiku responded:
“I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”
While he did not rule out a potential bid, the former VP emphasized Nigeria’s urgent need for competent leadership.
“I have not seen Nigeria in dire need of experienced and credible leadership more than this time. We had a similar merger in 2014. About four of us ran for president, and one of us emerged. We all supported the winner, and he won.”
Potential Alliances Ahead of 2027
Atiku’s recent coalition efforts have sparked speculation that he may throw his support behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in 2027.
While no official endorsement has been made, political observers believe Atiku’s next move could be pivotal in reshaping Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the next general election.
