Calabar, Cross River State – A police inspector, identified as Effiong Bassey, reportedly went berserk and shot three people at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Atakpa, Calabar, in the early hours of Sunday.
The Cross River State command of the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the incident in a statement released by its spokesperson, Ugbo Irene.
According to the police, Bassey had just returned from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank when he began exhibiting erratic behavior.
He allegedly refused to return his AK-47 rifle, barricaded the station’s gate, and prevented movement in and out of the premises. Despite multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation, Bassey continued his aggressive behavior.
As Tactical Units and Patrol Teams were deployed to contain the situation, the inspector opened fire on bystanders, hitting three people.
Casualties and Response
Among the victims was Ijeoma Wilson Obot, a 41-year-old woman, who succumbed to her injuries. Two other victims, identified as Charles Mkpang and another individual, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical care in stable condition.
Bassey was eventually subdued, disarmed, and taken into custody. He is now under investigation.
Police Assure Justice, Visit Victims
Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 6, along with the Cross River State Police Command Management Team, visited the hospital where the victims are being treated.
The AIG also made a donation to support their immediate medical care.
In an effort to calm tensions in the community, the police have engaged local stakeholders and urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue.
“The Cross River State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice, fairness, and equity. The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” the statement added.
The police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
