The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated as the Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a notice accusing Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, of gross misconduct in the performance of their duties.
The lawmakers, in a document obtained by Channels Television, stated that their action was in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides the legal framework for holding public officials accountable for misconduct.
Escalating Political Tensions
This latest move is seen as part of the ongoing power struggle in Rivers State, where Governor Fubara has faced opposition from the Assembly, which is believed to be loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike. The lawmakers had previously accused Fubara of delaying the state’s budget process, a claim he denied.
The notice of misconduct could signal the beginning of an impeachment process, further intensifying the battle for political control in the state. Neither the governor nor his deputy has publicly responded to the allegations.
Observers say this development could deepen the rift between the governor and the legislature, making political reconciliation increasingly difficult. The coming days will reveal whether the lawmakers will proceed with impeachment or if external interventions will resolve the conflict.
