A group of Ijaw women in Asari Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State have taken to the streets in protest, blocking the road to prevent the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from accessing the area.
The demonstration comes in response to Wike’s reported statement describing the Ijaw people as the “minority of minorities” in Rivers and other South-South states, except Bayelsa. The remark has sparked outrage among the Ijaw community, who view it as an insult to their identity and political relevance.
Women Mobilize Against Wike’s Visit
In a show of solidarity, the protesting women barricaded a major road leading to the venue of an event organized in Wike’s honor. They expressed their displeasure, chanting songs and carrying placards demanding respect for the Ijaw people.
The incident further highlights the deepening political crisis in Rivers State, where Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara remain locked in a fierce battle for control over the state’s political structure. The rift has led to increasing polarization, with different ethnic and political groups taking sides.
Ijaw National Congress Urges Tinubu to Intervene
Amid rising tensions, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution Wike and prevent further escalation of the crisis.
“We will maintain peace and stability as we call on President Tinubu to caution him and redirect his focus to his ministerial duties,” the INC said in a statement.
“The INC remains committed to preserving the harmony enjoyed by all in the Niger Delta region. We have taken note of the recent remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.”
The protest reflects the growing discontent among the Ijaw people, as political divisions in Rivers State continue to widen.
