A prominent leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has died at the age of 96.
According to a statement from his family, Adebanjo died peacefully on Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
“He died peacefully this morning at his Lekki home at the age of 96,” the statement read.
A Life of Activism and Leadership
Adebanjo was a renowned lawyer, a former Organising Secretary of the Action Group (AG), and the National Leader of Afenifere, where he played a pivotal role in advocating for democracy, justice, and Yoruba interests in Nigeria.
The family described him as a fearless advocate for truth, equity, and justice, adding that his lifelong struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria remained steadfast until his last breath.
Survived by Family and Legacy
Adebanjo is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
His passing marks the end of an era for Yoruba nationalism and progressive politics in Nigeria. Tributes are expected to pour in from political leaders, activists, and citizens in the coming days.
