Police Officer Commits Suicide in Kontagora

KONTAGORA – Tragedy struck in Kontagora Local Government Area on Saturday as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shafi’u Bawa reportedly took his own life.

Authorities confirmed that his father, Usman Bawa, reported the incident to the police. According to sources, Bawa was found hanging from the ceiling when his father entered his room.

Following the report, police officers arrived at the scene and transported his body to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where medical personnel confirmed his death. His remains were later handed over to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions.

In an official statement, the police provided further details:

“Today, Saturday, 08/02/25, at approximately 14:10 hours, Mr. Usman Bawa, a resident of Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported that his son, AP/No 337979, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling.

The lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. The corpse was released to the family for burial according to Islamic rites. Further updates will be communicated.”

Attempts to reach the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, for comments were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls or messages.
