Imo State, Nigeria – Gunmen on Tuesday night killed a police officer in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, further escalating security concerns in the region.

The attack occurred at NEPA Junction, Umulogho, where the assailants dragged the officer out of his residence before shooting him dead. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen ensured that no police personnel remained in the area before fleeing the scene.

“They spent about 45 minutes carrying out their operation without interference, firing shots sporadically to scare away residents,” an eyewitness said.

In a related incident, the attackers returned Wednesday morning to burn down the Otoko Divisional Police Station, located along the Owerri-Umuahia road. The assailants also targeted other locations, killing two security guards in Umuelemai, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, and setting vehicles ablaze within the vicinity.

The Imo State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, condemned the attacks. Okoye assured the public that those responsible would be apprehended.

“The perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice. Our tactical team has been deployed to the area to ensure the safety of lives and property,” Okoye stated.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incidents, as the wave of attacks continues to raise concerns about the worsening security situation in the state.
