In a statement issued yesterday, President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, delivered a stern warning against any assault on the armed forces or their personnel, declaring such actions as an attack on the nation itself.

His remarks came in response to the tragic killing of 16 soldiers during a peace mission in Okuama community, Delta State.

President Tinubu condemned the killing of the four senior officers and 12 soldiers, labeling the act as dastardly and unacceptable. He granted the military leadership full authority to pursue and bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing that those responsible would face the full wrath of the law.

Expressing profound grief over the needless loss of the gallant soldiers, Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and assured the nation that the military high command was taking necessary steps to address the unfortunate incident. He emphasized the need for the prosecution of the masterminds of the crime.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former governor Peter Obi, and several senators joined in condemning the killing, describing it as barbaric and heinous. They called for restraint and urged thorough investigations to ensure justice prevails.

Meanwhile, the military continued its siege on Okuama community, intensifying efforts to apprehend the perpetrators. However, reports of alleged excessive force raised concerns as heavily armed soldiers searched for the killers.

As the nation mourns the loss of the brave soldiers, calls for peace and unity resonate across the country. Concerned stakeholders emphasize the need to address underlying issues contributing to insecurity and violence, urging concerted efforts to prevent future tragedies.

The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by the armed forces in safeguarding the nation’s security. President Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving peace and tranquility in every part of Nigeria, echoing sentiments shared by Nigerians nationwide.
