…Say ECOWAS has become a threat to its member states, populations
Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have collectively decided to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing a departure from the organization’s founding ideals and principles.
In a joint statement issued, the heads of state of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger expressed regret, bitterness, and disappointment over the deviation of ECOWAS from its original goals and Pan-Africanism.
The three countries highlighted that, despite 49 years of existence, ECOWAS has failed to align with the aspirations of its founding fathers and has become influenced by foreign powers. They accused ECOWAS of betraying its principles and transforming into a threat to its member states rather than ensuring their well-being. The statement emphasized that the organization had not provided adequate assistance in the fight against terrorism and insecurity, and, in fact, had taken a detrimental stance by imposing sanctions against member states when they sought to address their own challenges independently.
The heads of state from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Colonel Assimi Goita, and Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, respectively – declared their decision to withdraw from ECOWAS. They asserted that this move is in response to the ongoing situation, and they take this action with full sovereignty, assuming their responsibilities before history and in consideration of the expectations, concerns, and aspirations of their populations.
