The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended its nationwide strike over attack on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero Imo state recently.
The decision to call off the strike which entered its second day on Wednesday, was taken at a joint National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
It was learnt that the suspension followed the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The meeting followed an earlier meeting that was held between the two labour organisation and the federal government at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
The NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, had invited the leadership of the NLC and TUC to a closed-door meeting in his office in an attempt to apprehend the strike which had crippled economic activities across the nation.
Ribadu, who apologised for what happened to Ajaero in Imo, begged the organised labour to suspend the strike, saying that the perpetrators had been arrested and investigations had commenced.
A reliable source who confirmed the suspension to newsreportersng.com, said the Unions considered the pledges made by the NSA to address the contentious issues in calling off the strike.
Ajaero was attacked in Owerri, Imo State capital, two weeks ago, while leading union members on a strike against alleged abuse of workers’ rights by the state government.
The Organised Labour then ordered its members to withdraw services and shutdown the nation indefinitely beginning from 12:00 AM on Tuesday, November 14 over the matter.
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) gave the directive at a joint press conference on Monday, in Abuja.
TUC president, Festus Osifo who led the briefing, said the government had refused to yield to the Congress’ demands regarding the incident.
He said the strike would hold until government woke up to its responsibilities.
